The environment is on everyone’s mind these days. If you have
a garden, there’s nothing like it. There’s a huge opportunity for you to
contribute to protecting the natural world. There’s a wide range of methods to
choose from when it comes to creating a garden as eco-friendly as possible, all
of which will make your outdoor space much more self-sustaining, will reduce
waste, and is designed to be more reliant on renewable sources of energy. It is
always a good time to think about eco-living as a way to make your outdoor
space much more plant-friendly.
No matter what your lawn size is, you can make outdoor space
more eco-friendly with just a few tweaks and tricks:
Plant a
Tree- According to research, gardens with trees are more
attractive to wildlife than those without. Trees are the bones of a garden,
providing additional benefits like shade and reduced noise pollution. Talking
about how it can help our planet, trees remove CO2 from the air (a greenhouse
gas that causes global warming by trapping heat on the planet) and produce
life-sustaining oxygen.
Attract
Friendly Bugs- Our world cannot exist without bees- our number one
pollinators, which highlights the importance of banishing bee-killing sprays to
help the bee population thrive. While there are plenty of bugs that can be
harmful to plants, there are also beneficial bugs that can not only help reduce
the population of harmful bugs, but also pollinate agricultural plants and
those in the wild, meaning if bees are eliminated, so are many plants species
and the seeds, fruits, etc. that they produce.
Introduce
Native Plants- Using native plants in your garden is one of the best ways
to attract wildlife to your garden as they are easy to grow (grow without
fertilizers or pesticides) and maintain, and are often more resistant to pests than
non-natives. They are low-to-no maintenance, and this is how it helps our
planet since gardeners often need to use chemicals when trying to make exotic
plants thrive, which isn’t the case with native plants.
Establish A
Compost Bin- Compost is the most important supplement you can have in
your eco garden’s soil, which will give your garden the nutrients it needs to
grow. It’s also cost-effective and a better solution for your environment.
Remember to not use peat in your compost. Talking about how it helps earth,
compost acts as a completely safe alternative to chemicals used to kill weeds,
and as fertilizers. Add lawn clippings, wood ash, hedge trimmings, tea bags,
egg boxes, leaves, shredded newspaper and cardboard, and vacuum cleaner
contents to your compost.
Introduce a
Bird Feeder- It goes without saying that birds are a delight in your
backyard, but they are also extremely effective at curbing population growth of
snails, slugs, caterpillars, grubs, and other insect pests. So, install bird
feeders to attract them. Relying on birds is far better than relying on toxic
synthetic insecticides, fungicides, and weed killers.
